Meeting the Family

I’ve been a little bummed out the past couple of weeks because between insane work schedules and both of us being sick, Mr. Big and I haven’t seen much of each other. And, with Christmas just around the corner, our schedules don’t look to be opening up anytime soon. But, the other day he completely surprised me by asking me if I wanted to meet his family. :O On Christmas Eve. :O
Putting aside the hugeness of the spending a major holiday together, I have a feeling that in Big world, the meeting of the family is super huge. At first I was really excited, the I was touched, now… I’m just kinda nervous. I really don’t know much about the family at all. I think I’ll be meeting the sister, brother-in-law and Mom. :O The more I think about it, the more nervous I am. I have no idea what to expect. And, even worse, I have no idea what to wear. Help!

Big didn’t give me any clues as to the dressiness of Christmas Eve in his family. (I can probably ask for some, but I have a feeling they’ll come in that non-helpful guy-speak, along the lines of “whatever you want is fine.”). I know he usually dresses on the upscale casual side of things, so I’m guessing along those lines? So, I have a couple ideas picked out and I need your help to find the perfect impress-the-family outfit.

Outfit #1

Green sweater, black jeans, red pumps.
The snag: Jeans might be too casual.

Outfit #2

Sweater dress, black tights, tall black boots.
The snag: Same outfit I wore to Big's Christmas party a couple weeks ago. And I'm pretty sure he'd notice the re-run.

Outfit #3

Little black dress. Always a classic.
The snag: Brrrrrrrr! It's freakin' cold outside!

Help! What do I wear? Any alternative suggestions? I'm heading to the mall today, so I'll update with pics of anything I may find. But, I'm feeling clueless.

Maybe outfit #1 with black slacks or skirt instead of jeans? Or the little black dress with a nice shawl to keep you warm.

Refhater said exactly what I was thinking. Gemma, have a great time and I look forward to hearing about it, too.

This said, remember, you'll look great no matter what you wear. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

LOL - great minds think alike. I vote for black slacks with Outfit #1 too. Dressy casual with a holiday twist.

(And I also can't spell after staying up until 12:30AM working on the current wip.)

Okay, #1 seems to be the winner. The only problem... I don't own any black slacks. I have never worn black slacks in my life. I'm from California - we're a jeans kinda state. Lol! But maybe I can find something on sale that's slacks-ish?

Could you do a black pencil skirt with black stockings or tights?

Refhater should be a fashion consultant.

Gemma, I agree with #1 outfit. However, if you can't get black slacks, how about dark or charcoal grey. Even a pinstripe might work.

Wow! This is huge. Kudos to Big for extending the invite.

I'd say outfit #1 is perfect. But Refhater has a point too. Switch up the bottom but stick with the sweater and those adorable red shoes. Love those!

If Big usually wears jeans, then I can't see that jeans would be too casual. He likes you and he must like how you dress. He wouldn't take you to meet the family if he thought what you'd wear wouldn't be right. So just be you and forget about all the rest. They're going to love you.

Put me down for outfit #1 with black slacks, too, Gemma. But as others have said, you'd look fabulous in anything!

Do let us know what your trip to the mall produces.

Brrr, Linda, now that's cold!!!

I love the pencil skirt idea! The only one I have has pink pinstripes, so I'll have to look for one of those... by the way... the mall is a mess today! You'd think Christmas was next week or something. ;)

Is it just those 3 that will be there? I would go casual so #1 would be my pick and I see nothing wrong with black jeans. I probably wouldn't even wear the sexy red shoes but then that could just be me.

Now all we need is a picture of you in the outfit!

I'm from Michigan too, so we'll be sporting fleece and flannel at our family Christmas. We got over a foot of new snow today with much more forcasted for this weekend. High temps of 19-20 degrees.

Hm. My question about outfit number 1 is those sleeves don't look friendly for helping with dishes if they're doing a meal :O)

If Big's wearing jeans, go with the jeans, if not, dress it up. Of course, now that you mentioned the pencil skirt with pink, I want to see that one!

I vote for outfit #1. It's nice, dressy, especially with the pumps, but the jeans dress it down a little in case the family get together is more casual than you think.

Good luck!

Is it??????????????

OMG!

I like outfit one. But what do I know, I'm a guy.

But what do I know, I'm a guy.
I need guys' opinions, too!

Okay, I found a nice knee-length black skirt I could wear with the green sweater and black boots. (The red heels looked a little too hoochie with it.) I'm taking the outfit on a trial run to my Aunt and Uncle's wedding anniversary party tonight. If it works - we have a winner!

Okay, I love all these votes for the jeans! I'm such a jeans gal myself - they go with everything! But, for some reason, I'm a little nervous about wearing them here. Big I've seen do slacks or jeans, he's a pretty sharp dresser actually. Probably has the best style of any guy I've ever dated. So, I guess I'd rather be too dressed than not enough.

Though, I'm so gonna laugh if I show up and everyone else is in jeans. :) I may just go home and change!

Will keep you posted... (Can you tell how nervous I am?!)
