Can you Pass me a Tissue?...
Oh come on, why are you running away?

Do you know that Hallmark commercial where a woman, a prior student, visits the retiring teacher, and as she leaves she hands the crusty ol’ man a thank you card, and before she gets out the door, he asks her, “So what did you end up being? A doctor?” And she answers in that soulful voice, “No, a teacher.”

For me, it’s like bam, instant tears. I’m standing there crying off my mascara that took me fifteen minutes to get on without clumping. And I’m not happy! Oh, and I think Hallmark is proud of their mascara smearing, too. I personally think they buy stock in Maybelline Great Lash.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not an anti-crier. Crying in itself isn’t all bad. Sometimes, crying can even be cathartic. I’ll admit that I’ve had a time or two when a good cry made me feel better. But, honestly, I’m not big on crying. I’d much rather laugh at my problems.

Now, I have friends who love to cry. They go out of their way to get a good cry. Give them a sad movie or a tear-jerker of a book and a box of tissues and they call that living. Me, I call it leaking. And I’m talking serious bodily fluids.

Tell me a sad story, give me a glimpse of someone else’s grief, or slap a Hallmark commercial on the TV, before I can wrestle the remote control from my husband’s hands, and it happens. First, I feel the heaviness in my chest. It’s like a labor pain, or a bad menstrual cramp of the heart, then the knot of emotion climbs up my throat and crowds out my tonsils making it hard to breathe. (Hey, we humans need to breathe!) Then the stinging pain starts crawling up my sinus cavities. That’s when my chin and bottom lip start to quiver and my vision goes from 20/20 to watery. Then the crap hits the fan when my nose starts leaking. Yup, before my tears ever start to fall, before the Great Lash starts melting down my face, my nostrils produce enough mucus to kill a cactus. Oh, then I go instantly puffy. Why, I give Rudolf a running in the red nose department. And if it’s a really deep-felt cry, then this noise, sort of like a baby bird’s last hungry cry before it croaks, starts bubbling out of me. Let me tell you, I don’t cry pretty!

I envy women who get the slightest little tear in their eyes and people everywhere open up their arms and say, “Ahh, come here. Let me give you a hug.”

Me, when I cry, the puffiness, red nose, and did I forget to tell you about the splotchiness, it all happens so quickly, and when the nose starts overflowing, and plainly put, there are no hug offers being made. People start backing away and pulling out their antiviral lotion. Yup, it’s almost as if I’m allergic to crying.

Those of you who have read my books might remember Sue of Divorced, Desperate and Dating and her non-pretty crying issues. Yup, that’s pretty much me in a nut shell.

I used a bit of my crying issues in my latest book, GOTCHA!, too. My heroine Macy Tucker’s mother is a serious crier. Macy’s mom’s doctor blames it on her being menopausal. Macy believes you can chunk the opausal from the word and just blame it on men. Deep down, Macy knows she has a bit of a weakness for tears herself. As a matter of fact, one of her biggest fears is that she’ll wind up like her mom, co-dependent and on a fourteen-year crying jag.

From Macy’s point of view, men (AKA reasons to cry) are like a great day on the beach. It might be fun while you’re there, but sooner or later you’re gonna get burned. She’s been burned, hurt, had her heart ripped out and given to a small dog with tiny sharp teeth to use as a chew toy. And she’s cried. Boy howdie, has she cried.

But Macy, she knows her weakness and has set limits. Two tissues. That’s right, two tissues are all she allows herself, and all she’ll allow any crying individual. I mean, she’ll hug ya, sigh, but after two tissues, it’s pull your big girl panties up and move on. Macy, much like myself, would rather laugh at her problems than cry over them.

And while I respect that not everyone deals with issues like this, below are a few sayings that I found on the benefits of laughter versus tears. People ask me all the time why I love writing humor and I have to say that the below sayings answer that question:

* Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and the other guy has an even better sob story.
* Laughter is like changing a baby’s diaper – it doesn’t permanently solve any problems, but makes things more acceptable for a while.
* If you laugh at it you can live with it.
* Blessed is the man who can laugh at himself, for he will never cease to be amused.
* Try to make the world laugh; it already has enough to cry about.
* Take time to laugh – it is the music of the soul.
* Your ulcers can’t grow while you’re laughing.

Here’s to laughter, guys! So tell me, do you cry pretty? Are you more of a laugher or a crier? What makes you cry? What makes you laugh? Come on, share a little. I’m giving away a copy of GOTCHA to one lucky commenter. If you have a copy of GOTCHA and would rather receive a copy of one of my other novels, I can substitute it.

Generally, I am more of a laugher than a crier. That's not to say I am opposed to crying by any means. I just have a different sense of humor and find humor where most don't. Almost anything can make me laugh ususally. What makes me cry as of late is the same thing that is causing the flood of tears to stream down my face as I type. We found out last week that my dad has cancer and I just woke from a dream that he died. So that is what has me crying my face off right now.

I'm the type of person that likes to laugh but tends to be soft hearted enough that I do cry often enough. Do I cry pretty? Not really. I have blue eyes and red just doesn't go well with blue eyes. What makes me cry? Anything soulful, something thats touching to see, read or hear. Learning that others have forgotten how to laugh sometimes. But if its not a sad cry but rather some tears of joy, say when laughing..those tears usually dont make a person look bad. And what makes me laugh? Life. Those oddball moments that seem to happen when you least expect it. Like when my neighbors laundry blew into my yard and my dogs decided to play with it. Such fun to explain the hole they made right between the legs of my neighbors pants.

First I'm so sorry about your dad. This is a hard thing to have deal with. My thoughts are with you. Hang in there and remember that as hard as it is, your dad needs to laugh, too. Make him laugh when ever can.

Thanks so much for stopping in.

Christie,

I'm definitely not a cryer. Proof of that, I would do anything as a kid to instigate a spanking, so I could go to my room and read. I would never cry the whole time my dad beat me with a belt.

I do have a soft heart and one of the things that will bring me a tear is watching the good things that people do.

Edie Ramer said...

I have the Rudolph nose syndrome while crying, too. I'll leave a room with a TV on if it's something too sad. I can't take it. (Not because of my nose, but because it hurts.) But my favorite books are ones that makes me cry and laugh. Though just laughter is enough, too. I love to laugh and smile while I read, which is why I'm looking forward to GOTCHA!

Sandy,

Christie,

I'm an uuuuugly crier. Red nose, scrunched up eyes, copious amounts of snot...not to mention the hideious "square mouth" syndrome. I've been known to shed a tear in church by listening to a beautiful song, or get tear eyed watching Extreme Home Makeover. (My 10 yr old daughter has a crush on Ty, BTW.) Certain movies and shows eally get to me, too. I cry when I'm angry. And being born a woman, I was innately blessed with the intelligence of knowing better than to use my fist to express anger. Therefore, I cry.

Crying, IMHO, is never a sign of weakness. Not even for guys. (As long as there's no nasally whining during or quivering lips, it's okay.) Did you know that doctors say that shedding tears on a regular basis is actually healthy. Okay. I made that part up but it sounded good. >grin< But it does make sense. Crying is a release of built up emotions. I like to think of it like having a sad orgasm. Ooops, can I say that here? Anyway...you usually feel better afterward and the wet spot is located on the pillow and not....

OK. I'm shutting up and logging off before I get arrested.

Take care, Christie. Can't wait to read, Gotcha. Have a great Tuesday!

Christie Craig said...

Okay, Kimberly,

I'm glad I'm not the only ugly crier. And I love the reference, "Sad orgasm." So what is laughing a "Happy orgasm?"

And yes, I do believe crying is an emotional release that is needed.

Thanks so much for stopping in.

I'm reading and enjoying Gotcha! now and own the rest of your books too. So don't include me in the contest.

BTW, when's the next book due out?

Ruth said...

I've never thought about being an ugly or pretty cryer. I'm a closet cryer- I don't like people to see me cry- and I rarely cry in front of anyone. In fact, if the need to cry starts to settle in, I fight it until my chest hurts so bad it feels like it will explode, and then I can't breathe. I usually go off some where and hide like a hurt puppy or I beat it back and in the dark of night, when no one is around I find a corner and cry my eyes out in silence.

Kristi said...

I cry at movies and certain scenes in books, when I get mad, upset, etc. I'm not a pretty cryer by any means.

The Notebook and Step Mom killed me, and while I haven't read a Danielle Steel book in a few years those always made me sob.

I'd much rather laugh though.

Kristi said...

I forgot to add not to put me in the contest because I already have all your books. Let someone else share the laughter.

My next book is out Nov. 26th, I think, the last week of November. The title is: Divorced, Desperate and Deceived. I had a hoot writing it, too. This is Kathy and the plumber's story.

Christie Craig said...

Kristi,

I'm a mad crier too. When I get mad I will cry before I say a word. Ahh, but after I've had time to contemplate, the tears stop and the temper comes out. Well, it's not like a bad temper, but I'm pretty good at doing what my kids called, "giving a talking to!"

Thanks,

i love your saying: Try to make the world laugh; it already has enough to cry about.

That's so true. And that's one of the reasons I love your books --you make me laugh and care about the person, but it's more than slapstick. The reader and the characters grow through the book, the laughter and connection.

Looking forward to reading GOTCHA!

Hello Christie,

There is a time to do both, laugh and cry. I prefer the first however a good cry ever now and then is good for the soul. No way do I cry pretty. I'm a blubbering and snotty mess by the time I get done. LOL Have a great day.

I am so not a pretty crier. I wish I was more of a laugher. But if something tugs at my heart (like black moments in books), my face scrunches up, my sinuses clog up, my eyes stream with tears. Not a pretty sight. Not very comfy physically either, now that I think about it. *g*

Unknown said...

You can count on me to cry on three occasions. Every single time I watch Finding Neverland, don't even get me started..seriously...my kids pick on me like crazy because I cry at the same time, same scene and same dialogue. I'm pathetic..yea, you heard me.

Secondly, is watching The Waking of Ned Devine. I laughed so hard I cried. You know how you laugh so hard you split a stitch? Well notch that up by 20 degrees and I laughed so hard that I stopped breathing, then gulped air and stopped breathing again...it's a vicious cycle, but I love it.

And last, I'm a sentemental ninny as you've read. I cry over happy, sad, goodtimes or bad( hey was that a song....lolol)things that concern my girls. Being a mom has made me split my seams while busting a gut. Other times I have had my heart ripped out served on a silver platter. But in the end I found that crying and laughing at the same time is a dou-able fate!
Happy Writing,

I am more of a laugher than a crier. But when I cry its not pretty at all. I get puffy, red and my nose starts running. Then I end up with problems with my contacts. So I guess I am lucky I laugh more.

Unknown said...

I'm definitely more of a laugher.

Unknown said...

Oh, gosh, I actually do both! My crying, however, is mostly because of Disney movies or those darned Hallmark commercials you mention, Christie! LOL, even the Hallmark movies get to me most of the time. But everything else in life is laughter, one, because it does feel better than crying, and, two, like you, I'm not a pretty crier at all. Red and blotchy don't work for me either. And a Christie Craig book will make me laugh every time! As do my nieces and nephew when we get together. The young are always hilarious! LOL, whether they mean to be or not.

Keri Ford said...

Sorry, Christie. I'm not really a slobbery crier. I'm a quiet crier. You'd never know i had tears running off my face unless you look at me.

HOWEVER, there are those exceptions when I get too emotional, then I start all that hiccuping/sniffing stuff.

I used to never cry, but then I'm not sure what happened, my hormones got off track and they've never been exactly right sense. I cry almost every time at the end of Hercules when Meg tells him, "People do crazy things when they're in love". luckily that just triggers the rolling tears and nothing else.

Terri Osburn said...

I don't think I'm an ugly cryer, but I'm sure I don't fall under the pretty category either. I guess I just never look at myself when I cry. I know it hurts like heck in my sinuses after and as someone else mentioned, messes with my contacts.

I cry when I'm really mad (which makes me madder) and I'm crying more the older I get. Certain movies make me cry EVERY time. Step Mom and Steel Magnolias to name a couple.

For me, the best books are the ones that make me cry. Your last book made me laugh and cry, but laugh more, of course.

I bought this one already and I have the rest, so I'll let someone else have a chance. And I think it's so funny that you put your crying in a book. LOL!

Billie Jo said...

Hi Christie,

I'm not a pretty crier and avoid tear jerker movies like the plague. Real life is too sad as it is. Give me a silly sitcom or comedy movie or a humorous Christie Craig book any day.

I have been known to watch the news with tears rolling down my face. I love to watch the news and laugh at the really dumb stuff that seems to come out of reporters mouths on a regular basis. A recent tears to laughter moment from a local reporter on the earthquake in Italy involved all the attendant hardship tragedies (tears) followed by news the government had sent in troops to guard victims...pause with obvious attempt to find the right word only to come up with...stuff. I shouldn't have laughed but, come on, stuff??? Possessions, maybe, but not stuff.

Here's another saying for your list:

Laugh....its contagious!

I don't need to be in the drawing. I read "Gotcha" as an ARC. As I've said before, I think it is your best book yet. Can't wait for November and DD&Deceived.

Now I'm off to be a fangirl and follow you blogging around the web.

I am a little of both sometimes I cry but not often, I would rather laugh. I would much rather read a book that makes me laugh then one that makes me cry. What make me cry is really sad stories where someone dies of somethink like that. Bring on the laughter!

Jane said...

I'm another one who's more of a laugher than a crier. There have been a few romances that made me shed a few tears like Linda Howard's "Cry No More."

Refhater said...

I am an ugly crier as well. I tend to cry when I'm frustrated more so than when I'm sad. (I guess I've lived through so many sad times that crying doesn't help anymore.) And sometimes, its either laugh or cry, so I choose to laugh. Laughter is the best medicine they say.

My family makes me laugh. The way my mom gets her words mixed up and ends up saying something totally wrong at the right time. The way my dad dances when he thinks no one is looking. Any and everything that my nieces do. The way we talk smack while playing card games. With 7 adults, 2 young kids, 2 dogs, and a cat, there's always something going on to laugh about.

LOL. I love laughing over here!

When I was pregnant, late, past the 9 months, with my first daughter, I watched GHOST with Patrick Demi and Whoopi and I started getting all emotional and crying and the baby was moving like it was on a trampoline in there (not fun at 9 months) and so thought I was in labor but my hubby convinced me not.

I rarely watch a sad movie or read a sad book. I know my hubby when he's holding me when I'm crying that he is sneering! LOL So its not pretty.

My eyes overflow at every opportunity. Happy, sad, nostalgic, angry, it's very frustrating. My eyes get blotchy, my makeup runs, and I look a mess.
If I'm at work and someone makes me angry, or I'm feeling particularly sorry for myself, you can guarantee someone will want to talk to me after the tears flow! Then I have to claim allergies or an eyelash or something.

I hate crying at those commercials or movies. I hate being manipulated in that manner.

And it's so not pretty. Hiccuping, splotchy, ugly nasty crying that leaves me with a hangover and snot all over my clothes. I hate crying.

Best of luck with the book signings!

I don't mind a sad moment in a book, as long it doesn't go on too long or end badly. It's crazy, it's as if I have this line and when they cross it into being too sad, they lose me. I guess you could say I don't mind a sad moment/scene, but I don't want to read a depressing book.

I'm not much of a crier overall, but when I do cry it tends to be at completely inappropriate moments. I was showing The Dollmaker to my 8th grade (lots of time to kill....and in my defense it does show farmers moving to cities in the 40s...I'll try to justify it as true social studies). Anyway, the train runs over the kid in the movie and I starting sobbing. Twenty kids turned to look at my like I had sprouted another head. They're still talking about...it's probably the only thing they will ever remember about me.

Nita,

You are one of the friends I was talking about. LOL. I've heard you say many times, that nothing feels better than a good cry at a movie or book.

Thanks girl for getting GOTCHA!

Tell Rebeka I said thank you for wanting to get my book for her teachers.

Hi Christie! I'm not a pretty crier either! The hallmark commercial tears me up too! BTW, I ordered GOTCHA from Rhapsody and guess what? It's sold out!! My copy is on back order!! Thought you'd like to know that.

I'm a little late in replying but it's okay. I am more of a laugher than a crier, but when I do cry it isn't pretty at all. Not only do I get puffy, my nose starts running but I end up banging my feet on the floor trying to stop myself. I know that sounds pretty weird, and believe me when I say it doesn't work but I end up doing it anyway.

I also cry over the stupidest things, a hallmark commercial, a song on the radio, a really good book or a tearjerker of a movie.

I wish I was a two tissue person but man I end up with half the box in my lap, lol. Also I sometimes end up laughing at myself, especially when somebody else is laughing at me to begin with.

Great blog as usual! Can't wait to read Gotcha, just gotta get through this dang Western Lit class first.

Hi Michelle,

Welcome to the laughing club! And to be able to laugh at yourself is great thing!

Thanks so much for popping in.

Christie, I'm thrilled! I just looked for your book at Target today, and it wasn't there. :( There were some empty spots, so maybe it was sold out.

Congratulations, Billie Jo!
