Love... according to kids

The winner of an autographed copy of ALIBI IN HIGH HEELS, along with some yummy Valentine’s Day candies is conley730!!! Conley730, email me your snail mail address and I'll get your prize out to you ASAP. gemmahalliday (at) gmail (dot) com.

Happy almost Valentine’s Day everyone! (And for you superstitious types – Happy Friday the 13th!) I hope you’ve all stocked up on chocolates and little conversation hearts. Myself, I’ve spent the week racking my brain for a good V-day gift for Mr. Big. So far, coming up with nada. Any last minute suggestions for me?

While you mull that over, here are some totally adorable tips on love from a group of kids age 5-10. (No, I didn’t interview them myself, but, man, I wish I had!)

WHAT IS THE PROPER AGE TO GET MARRIED?

"Once I'm done with kindergarten, I'm going to find me a wife." (Tom, 5)

WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?

"On the first date, they just tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date." (Mike, 9)

WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?

"You should never kiss a girl unless you have enough bucks to buy her a big ring and her own VCR, cause she'll want to have videos of the wedding." (Jim, 10)

CONCERNING WHY LOVE HAPPENS BETWEEN TWO PARTICULAR PEOPLE:

"No one is sure why it happens, but I heard it has something to do with how you smell. That's why perfume and deodorant are so popular." (Jan, 9)

ON WHAT FALLING IN LOVE IS LIKE:

"Like an avalanche where you have to run for your life." (Roger, 9)

"If falling in love is anything like learning how to spell, I don't want to do it. It takes too long." (Leo, 7)

ON THE ROLE OF GOOD LOOKS IN LOVE:

"If you want to be loved by somebody who isn't already in your family, it doesn't hurt to be beautiful." (Jeanne, 8)

"It isn't always just how you look. Look at me, I'm handsome like anything and I haven't got anybody to marry me yet." (Gary, 7)

"Beauty is skin deep. But how rich you are can last a long time." (Christine, 9)

CONCERNING WHY LOVERS OFTEN HOLD HANDS:

"They want to make sure their rings don't fall off because they paid good money for them." (Dave, 8)

CONFIDENTIAL OPINIONS ABOUT LOVE:

"I'm in favor of love as long as it doesn't happen when 'The Simpsons' is on television." (Anita, 6)

"Love will find you, even if you are trying to hide from it. I have been trying to hide from it since I was five, but the girls keep finding me." (Bobby, 8)

"I'm not rushing into being in love. I'm finding fourth grade hard enough." (Regina, 10)

THE PERSONAL QUALITIES NECESSARY TO BE A GOOD LOVER:

"One of you should know how to write a check. Because even if you have tons of love, there is still going to be a lot of bills." (Ava, 8)

SOME SUREFIRE WAYS TO MAKE A PERSON FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU:

"Don't do things like have smelly, green sneakers. You might get attention, but attention ain't the same thing as love." (Alonzo, 9)

"One way is to take the girl out to eat. Make sure it's something she likes to eat. French fries usually work for me." (Bart, 9)

WHAT MOST PEOPLE ARE THINKING WHEN THEY SAY "I LOVE YOU"

"The person is thinking, Yeah, I really do love him. But I hope he showers at least once a day." (Michelle,9)

HOW TO MAKE LOVE ENDURE:

"Spend most of your time loving instead of going to work." (Tom, 7)

"Be a good kisser. It might make your wife forget that you never take out the trash." (Randy,8)

So, who has some tips of their own to share?

Those are really great (and some had some truth to them, I think). I'm quite sure no tips of mine could possibly top those :-)

Happy Valentine's!

Those are too cute!
And my tip for love is to be sure to take time each day to pay attention to each other. Even if it's a short time of "Hi, how was your day?" It's a daily job really, but it should be an enjoyable one. The husband and I always take a few minutes when he gets home for a hug and a quick talk at least.

I love these kinds of things. Kids really do see more than we give them credit for. LOL!

Here's one from me:
Live everyday as if it's Valentine's Day.

Friday the 13th came in a big way for me this morning.

I walked out of the house and fell down the cement stairs in front. My daughter heard me yell as I went down, came running out to help me in her socks, hit the ice and SHE fell too.

She's fine. She's 11, young and flexible. I, on the other hand hurt my knee, back and wrist. I'm going to be dying later.

These are a riot!

"Don't do things like have smelly, green sneakers. You might get attention, but attention ain't the same thing as love."

But this one sent me into hysterics. *g*

Kristi - Oh no!! I hope you're doing okay. I would suggest icing everything, but that just seems ironically mean. {{{hugs}}}

Love the tips they were great! To tell you the truth those kids were right a lot. I got a good laugh out of them. My tip is to make sure you end all tiffs before going to bed so you can start the next day new again.

These are so funny! You don't think kids could know those things, but man the answer they come up with!

Gemma, I'm taking hubs to the movies on Sunday. Mom's scheduled to keep the kid so we can catch an afternoon flick. He's been dying to go to the movies and really wanting to see Taken.

It'll be our first 'date' since having the kid almost 2 years ago.

They got pretty close on some of those answers - mainly don't smell and have lots of money hahahaha I agree. My tip - Don't take anything for granted!

Enjoy your "first date", Keri! I hope you and the man have a great time.

I think I'm going to be spending Valentine's Day doing my taxes. Maybe Turbo Tax will give me a good Valentine!

These really are great. I just love the things kids say.

What sweet children! Too bad you can't ask them what you should get him for V-day! I'll bet they would have the answer.

Make sure they are someone you like to talk to, after everything else is gone you'll still have good conversation.

Gemma - I hope you get another cool purse out of the day. As for Mr. Big - he's already got you :)

Love those tips from the kids - they are too cute!

Gemma Halliday said...

Aww, thanks, Jenyfer!

Well, considering we're both sick today, it may not be the most romantic Valentine's day ever, but I'm determined to enjoy it anyway.

Bwahahaha! Those were so cute! XD

I would say, don't spend all your time together, so at the end of the day you have something to talk about. :D Don't know if that works though. lol!
