Interesting Pets

I hope everyone had a fabulous Fourth of July! I worked, as usual, but hey, books don't write themselves. I also tried to do some work in the garage, but it's so hot here that I had to do it in ten minute shifts. Maybe sometime in the fall I'll actually finish my current project.

Television and news stories are full of stuff about pets. Most all of us love animals and I'd guess that a huge portion of the population has pets, but some are just different than others. I have dogs and cats, and granted they're all unique and have their own quirks, but I have to say they're not the strangest pets I've had. The strangest had to be the ferrets.

I had two - one male one female - named Jake and Sydney (for those of you who remember Melrose Place). Ferrets are not the pet for everyone. They are stinky, for one, and you can't bathe them as often as they stink because they have sensitive skin. And like mice, anything they can fit their head through, they can squeeze their entire body through. So that "little" hole around the plumbing fixture behind the toilet can became a doorway into the wall and beyond for a ferret. Guess how you have to get the ferret out of the wall......yeah, you sorts have to tear out part of the wall and hope they decide to come back before they fall to the first floor. Have I mentioned that I hate sheetrocking?

And then there's the stealing. Ferrets are horrible thieves. They will take anything they can lift and store in their secret hiding place - usually somewhere you don't fit. And my ferrets were a tag-team pair. Sydney could unzip things, like suitcases and purses and Jake could run with the biggest of items. My brother came to stay with me for a bit after getting out of the military and darned near ran out of socks before we found their hiding place. Sydney would unzip his suitcase and away Jake went. There's nothing like watching a grown man chase a ferret running with a tube sock longer than him.

So what's the most interesting pet you've had?

We had ferrets! They're so fun to watch.

I think the strangest pets we had were hedgehogs. My brother had a male and I had a female -- course we didn't know this until mine woke me up in the middle of the night having babies. The second time it happened, I gave her over to my brother. My dad had made a little area for them to burrow and play outside, and, because they wouldn't keep them separate, she kept getting knocked up. Yeah, many friends in the neighborhood ended up with hedgehogs as well after that.

I had a pet silky bandy chicken. The kind from China with a darling topknot on her head. Her name was Sunny, for her beautiful soft yellow feathers. She was a sweetheart and loved to be held and petted.

One time we couldn't find her. After two days of searching my oldest son discovered her stuck behind a bale of hay. Awe, poor girl. But, she was okay.

I guess the strangest pet I've had, though not really all that strange, was a guinea pig named Pepper, even though it should have been called Salt-n-Pepper since it was black and white. *g*

I think every one of my eight cats is strange. The newest, a kitten we rescued, likes to chase paper balls and carry them around in her mouth. Then there's the kitty we call the Stalker...... *G*

When we were growing up, we needed self contained pets that were relativly easy to take care of. So, we had newts. (Little lizards.) We called them Olivia "Newt"on John and Sir Issac "Newt"on.

Becky - I've seen hedgehogs in the store and they look so cute. But I wondered if they did anything. They're always sleeping when I see them.

Caroline - My sis-in-law has some of those. I spent forever chasing one down at Easter to take a picture. I'll have to find it and post sometime. :)

Tori - I never had guinea pigs. I don't think my mom would have liked it. She thought they were big rats. And in her defense, they do sorta favor nutria.

Brandy - I have one angry kitty too. She's picky about her personal space and that just happens to be ten feet by ten feet. :)

My little yorkie is a sock thief. She tucks them into her bed until someone will open the patio door for her. Then she bolts to the back forty of my yard and strategically places them in the far corners. My mother recently visited and asked if I was planting socks in my yard hoping they'd multiply. Yes, there are that many. Weird.

The visual of the ferret with the tube socks is priceless!

No weird pets here. If I have to feed/clean/deal with it more than once a week, it's too high maintenance for me.

I used to have cats, but right now I have to settle for my brother's dog. But I think she must have been a cat in a previous life. When she’s here, she always tries to climb on the back of a sofa that is by the window -just like my cats used to do, but she’s a bit too big to that. Once she even fell down the floor because of it. And I’ve been told she occasionally makes these sounds that sound like meows. And when she decides something -like run to my cousins' summer cottage- it's useless to try to make her obey and stay.
