Killer Fiction's Kick Off the New Year Contest!!!!

There's nothing better than a contest to kick off the year! Here at Killer Fiction, we'd like to thank all our readers for a fabulous 2010 and kick off 2011 in fine fashion. And what better way to kick off the new year than with free stuff! All the rules for the contest are on the sidebar, so read up and make sure you're entered to win great prizes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All contest winners will be drawn the weekend following the end of the contest. So if you didn't hear about the contest right away, don't despair - you can still go back to previous blog posts and enter.

For my blog day, I am giving away a $25 egift card to BN.com or amazon.com - winner's choice! I'm also offering a free download of TROUBLE IN MUDBUG, the first book in the Ghost-in-Law mystery/romance series, from Jan. 10th through the 21st. Just visit Smashwords, buy TROUBLE IN MUDBUG and enter coupon code BR76Y at checkout. You can select any digital format from Smashwords, even those that don't require an ereader or ereader software. Enjoy! To see all of my available backlist and read excerpts, please visit my author website. For those of you who have already visited in the last couple of months, you'll see a change - I have my original covers back for all the books except UNLUCKY! The cover artist tracked me down and offered me digital rights, so my fabulous covers are back in place. A very Happy New Year for me!

For my official contest blog post, I decided to share with you the story of my first ever reader review. I once told my critique partner that I wanted to be a writer because books had given me so much pleasure all my life, and that if I could give that feeling to even one person, I would be successful. And then I got my first review.

The review was from a professional reviewer on an advanced reader copy of RUMBLE ON THE BAYOU. The review was glowing and I was beside myself with happiness. Of course, I immediately emailed the reviewer to thank her for the wonderful review and that's when I got more than I bargained for.

The reviewer emailed back and said how much she'd enjoyed the book and that it had been a real surprise. Then she went on to say that she'd dreaded that month coming because her child had died that month the year before. But, she said, when she was reading my book, she forgot about everything for just a little while and even laughed.

Totally made me cry.

Words are powerful. Words CAN change someone's life, even if only to allow laughter for just a few fleeting moments.

So take as much time as you have to read a good book. And if you really enjoyed it, email the author and let them know. Anyone who knows much about the business of writing knows we're not in it for the money. We're in it because we love a good book and there's no greater high than producing one yourself.

Thank you for the free read !!! As soon as I'm done with my response I'm downloading it.

I've already written to some of my favorite authors, right after I've "discovered" them, lol. I know I always feel very grateful when I read the kind of book I would have looooved to write (if I had any talent I mean). I wrote to Kristan Higgins, Christie Craig and Susan Elizabeth ohillips. Some others too but I can't remember. I just needed to tell them how good their book had make me feel.
Also I received nice sweet replies from them... and that I think is one great thing about the online romance writer community... you share with your readers !!

Thanks for the contest week and the book !

Ohhhh, I love contests. I want to win, I want to win. Wait. Am I not allowed to win? But there are so many neat prizes. Oh, darn! LOL.

I love the post, Jana. Words really are powerful and nothing is better than hearing from readers that your words, your book, helped someone get through a tough time. It's the best big prize in this business.

Great blog post, by the way. Getting that first review, especially when it is a great one, just seems to make wall the effort and agony that we pour into a book seem worth it.

Hope this year brings you lots of better times.

I feel like a big dorky fanboy when I tell authors I like their work. "Um, I liked your book . Um, thanks." I was amazed to hear that authors actually want to hear from fans.

That was a powerful piece of feedback that you got from your reviewer. You were able to touch her life and give a little bit of comfort.

I've had many misconceptions about authors cleared up since becoming involved in the whole social media thing. One being that once published, forevermore published. The other being that it may not be all that lucrative and is done more for love than financial reward. So I say this as often as I can: thank you from the bottom of my heart. Often when I tell an author I enjoyed their book, I get an outpouring of gratitude. But, it is me who is forever grateful! I get all the rewards from reading books, without having to put forth any of the effort and I truly appreciate all the blood, sweat, and tears that go into writing as well as the nail-biting pressure of getting published!!! THANK YOU!!

What a great story! There have been so very many books that I've said to myself that I need to let that author know just how much I enjoyed her (or his) writings, but it's been rare that I've actually acted on it. That review had to let you know you took the right step in becoming an author!
P.S. Thank you for the contest too

Thank you so much for the free read! The first review you shared brought me to tears and I understand the reviewer so well. There have been certain books that I have read that really touched my heart or let me escape into a world of less stress and worry. I always let the writer know as sometimes you are not sure if they know what a big impact their words can have on someone's life and I like to thank them for becoming a writer, as without them my world would be so much smaller and so much duller!

With this day and age when money is always tight, it's nice to see we can always find a free read. When I can read 3/4 books a week, I down too maybe 2, unless I can find a free read. The amazing thing is, when I find those rare free reads, it's someone new and I'd say 98% of the time the have reader for life, there usally the newbies getting started and there "FRESH" reads. Keep writing and we'll keep reading.

What a great post. I read books to be entertained or just to get away from my troubles for awhile. Comedy does that for me. People always look at you funny when you're laughing out loud because of something that happened or was said on a particular page. I don't care about that though, I just tell them you should read this book
it's hilarious. Sometimes life is really difficult and you authors give us a chance to escape them if even for a little while.
Thanks

Words ARE powerful! Perhaps we should all strive to give a compliment to someone every.single.day. Maybe that would help make this world a better place?

I thought there was going to be a new post every day this week?
Oh, well, back to my reading.

I appreciated your blog. I ama reader. I have no desire to be an author. I'll read pretty much anything and only rarely do I say to myself how could I have wasted that much of my life reading that dreck. Reading takes me away. It makes me, laugh, cry, cringe, and think. Thanks to the internet we have greater acess to our favorite authors and can encourage them as they grow. I try to do that. I also get to thank the ones I've read for the hours of enjoyment.

You are so right about the reasons (most of us) really write. There is nothing quite like the rush of someone saying, "I loved your book."

Thank you for the free read!

I also love contests and appreciate that authors think of their fans.

I really enjoyed reading your post and thanks for sharing!

I like to tell writers when their books have moved me to laughter, to tears or simply to think about things differently.

Today's answer: An attitude of gratitude goes a long way.

Jana,
Thanks for the free read, and the week-plus of contests! Thanks for the reminder. I need to send some emails to several fab authors!

I never thought about writing to the author, because I figured that they wouldn't read the e-mail. Thank you for giving me a different slant on things. I appreciate the free book as well. That was an added treat! Have a great New Year!

It sounds like your book came into the reviewers life just when she needed it most. Words can be powerful both good and bad and the reviewer needed your good words to help her through a tramic time in her life.

Thank you for the free read of Trouble in Mudbug. I am sure it is great as your other books are as I have read a few of them. Happy Reading, Janean

Thanks for the book! It sounds very good! I do like to write the authors and tell them I enjoyed their books. I'm not good at reviewing but I wil tell you that I like a book. :)
