Why I Long For the Coming Snowstorm

This, is what my yard is supposed to look like.  It doesn't.  Instead, it's brown and gray and cold, but not white, and fluffy and pretty.

And it sucks.

We had a gray Xmas last year.  It was bleak.  Now, they say we will get some serious snow tonight into Thursday, and they'd better be right.  Because I want a white Xmas!

No, not because it's prettier.  No, not because it's more festive (although these are very nice reasons).

I want snow because now I have teenagers who can shovel.  It's called Poetic Justice.

It's a very narrow window.  Two years ago, Mr. Assassin was in Iraq and the kids were still in elementary school and I worked full time and we had four blizzards that dumped 8 inches each time.  I damn near killed myself shoveling.

Now it's their turn.

Why the short window?  Because I can only enjoy three more winters before Margaret goes off to college - therefore losing half of my shoveling squad.

I want to be like the guy in the commercial, inside the warm house, sipping tea and watching the kids shovel in freezing temps.

It's not mean.  I had to do it when I was a kid.  It's a rite of passage, if you will.  Yeah...that's it!

So tonight, we will get 6 inches at least.

It's a beautiful thing.

I grew up with snow (we don't really get it here at the beach) and I remember the year we bought a snow blower. Angels sang throughout the land. Or maybe that was just my dad.

We had a neighbor with a snowblower. He was the vice principal at the high school and all the teachers lived in our neighborhood. So he got up at 4am and did all the teachers' driveways so they couldn't say they couldn't get to work.

Ha! Very smart. LOL! We lived on a very steep hill so even if we got the driveway cleared, we often still couldn't get out of the neighborhood.

Ugh, we have a lot of steep hills here. When they're covered in ice, you just stay home and break out the vodka and cake!

I wish we had White Christmases here. Unfortunately, I live in the South and we're going to be in the high 50's for Christmas. Bleh.

Love your thinking. Personally I consider snow a four letter word. For years I worked the day shift in surgery, usually meaning we had to be at work at 6:30am no excuses. I also, worked travel contracts and it never failed I had a northern assignment during the winter months then in the summer I was in southern california. I didn't have to worry about shoveling snow as much as having to get my vehicle cleaned off before I could leave. Since I didn't want to get to work in wet clothes then have them stuck in my locker all day I would get up early clean off the car then go inside and put on dry clothes to get to work.

Hope you got your snow, Leslie! We got 15-20 inches (my side of town is closer to 20) out of that storm system here in the Madison, Wis area. It finally looks like December is supposed to, and not greener than spring.
