Off the Wagon...

First off, to all my fellow Americans who are affected by Hurricane Sandy, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this extremely difficult time.

**************

And no. This blog post isn't about the upcoming election. I'm sure we're all up-to-here with the phone calls and TV ads that seem to barrage us twenty-four seven. I know I am. No. This post is about...soda. That's right. Pop.

Several years ago I gave up drinking soda. I'd always been a Pepsi fan--couldn't abide Diet Anything. And since the sugar laden colas I consumed made my physician frown, I decided to go cold turkey and quit the soda pop.

That was four years ago.

Several months ago, however, I had my first Diet Coke in like forever. And since that time I haven't been able to stop.

Now while I know the diet stuff is better for me than the "real thing", I also know that no pop at all is even better. I'm trying to taper off and quit, but I'm not having much luck.

So, informal survey of the day. What is your favorite soda pop? And, confession time here, how much of that beverage do you drink a day. Or will admit to? Any tips on how to cut back on the pop consumption besides taking a vow not to have any in the house?

Or...switching to wine maybe?

Here's to breaking those bad habits. Cheers!

I grew up on Pepsi. No water. No milk. No juice. We drank Pepsi. Now I can't drink anything carbonated. Started about 20 years ago and I've been off soda ever since. Every now and then I'll grab a can here at work and have 3 or 4 sips, but more than that and I'll be sick for hours.

So I drink water. That's it. No beer or wine or soda or juice. Just water. Sadly, this has no led to slimness. *sigh*

It's always been Diet even as a kid. My favorites are flavored like Cherry Coke or Dr Pepper but I only have maybe 1 or 2 a week normally. If I buy a six pack I can do one a day but it's usually only when I'm out to eat.

Yes, to the wine lol. Luckily I never got hooked on sodas. We didn't have much as a child but I did like cherry cokes when I could get them or ginger ale. I've been against diet anything for a long time. I just don't trust what it's made of and I keep hearing how it's more addictive than the actual soda drinks. So coffee during the day, wine with dinner and a glass of cherry water (from concentrate) that has lots of antioxidants that are good for you but tastes great too.

Regular coke. Usually have 2-3 day, sometimes less. Now with the new smaller bottles even though I'm still drinking 2-3 it's a lesser amount. So glad they came out with the 12oz bottles & 8 oz cans.

I start my day with Diet Pepsi for that caffine hit (I despise coffee) then after lunch I swith to Diet A&W Root Boor which is caffine free. I do love my soda.

I, too, don't like coffee and need some caffeine to jumpstart my day so I get my fix from Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper. I also like the fizzy waters that WW has- black cherry is my favorite.

I started with 16 oz. Pepsi as a teenager when the only diet drink was Tab (blech). I graduated to diet Pepsi when everybody decided that diet soda was 'better' for us. I have had a mean habit for I guess 35 years - yikes. My habit was two 20oz. bottles a day. I quit very recently as agreed with my naturopath for a 1-week test off aspartame to eliminate it as contributing factor to a problem. I ended up doing 2+ weeks without -the overachiever in me- and now only occasionally drinking a little. somehow it just doesn't taste good to me anymore. i don't understand or believe it so i keep trying it again but keep having that same reaction (blech). so, at least for now, it's iced tea for me!

I always drank regular Dr Pepper for many years, just one a day, but about 6 years ago my doctor started talking about diabetes so I began drinking diet Dr Pepper, mostly Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper or Diet Cherry Dr Pepper, still only one a day. Luckily, I don't have a blood sugar problem, but still stick to the diet, it has helped me lose 56 lbs in the last 1 1/2 years, so I'll stay with it.

You are no doubt better off for sticking to the H2O, Terri. I'm S-LO-W-L-Y weaning myself off. I've only had one 12 ounce can each day for the last three days!

Hoorah!

It's so weird, Cheryl. Until recently I couldn't stand the after taste I got with diet colas. Now, I don't seem to have an issue.

And we never had soda growing up except on special occasions. Guess I need to revert back to that habit...

Sounds like a very reasonable regime, catslady. Like you, we didn't have soda when we were growing up so it was only later I started drinking it on a regular basis.

I do know that there are not-so-good things in diet drinks that I'm better off to avoid.

And it seems like every day they are changing the recommendations on coffee. First it's bad. Then, it's okay. Then it's actually good for you. Hard to keep up...

The year I wrote 3 books in 14 months I lived on a diet of two liter Cokes and chocolate, Sabrina. That was when I decided too much of a good thing is never a good thing so I stopped cold turkey (on the soda--NOT the chocolate.) ;)

I start with a cup of coffee in the A.M., Mo. It's in the afternoon when I really get the urge for a soda--especially when I'm here at home. I try hard to avoid soda at work and stick mainly to water. The temptation is great, however, since we have access to fifty cent cans of soda at work.

I've never liked the fizzy waters, Brandy, but my daughter loves them. I don't like any fruit-flavored soda really. HATE Mt. Dew and can tolerate Sprite or 7-Up. Love Root Beer--especially in the summer with a scoop of ice cream!

Wow! Talk about over-achievers, Moojuice! I guess I need to just go cold turkey again, too.

And I know what you mean about losing the taste for something. When I knocked off the "real thing" sodas years ago, they just didn't taste good to me when I tried them again. I also like tea (iced or hot) and try to go decaf when I can.

Good for you, Barbara!

When one of my family members was diagnosed with diabetes, that was also a catalyst for me to cut out the sugared soda. And you know what? I also lost some ellbees!

I just wish I hadn't picked up another bad habit along the way.

Ah, well. I WILL persevere! Once I have finished the soda I have on hand, I won't replace it and we'll see how I do.

And thanks to everyone for chiming in! Enjoy your weekend!
