I got my boxes of The Secret of Cypriere Bayou last week. The cover is the absolute coolest. It has a bayou and sunset and looks spooky and is perfect for the story.
Getting boxes of books is one of the best parts of being an author. I usually pour my books out on the floor and lay in them, just smelling the pages and pretty much wallowing in happiness for a moment. All the while, trying not to bend a cover, of course.
In other cool news, I was invited to guest blog on the Romantic Times Book Reviews blog next month, and my post will be in the point-of-view of The Secret of Cypriere Bayou heroine, Olivia, who writes horror novels while staying in haunted houses.
So because I'm so happy about books and super-excited about the invite to blog from RT (THE authority in romance reviews), I'm giving away a free copy of The Secret of Cypriere Bayou to a blog poster. Check back at this post Tuesday morning and I'll list the winner at the top!

Last weekend, I saw Black Swan. While I was super impressed with Natalie Portman's performance, I was underwhelmed by the movie itself. Now, I am a hardcore horror and thriller movie buff, so when I saw underwhelmed, that's probably not most people's standards. But essentially, the movie did not create a visceral response in me.
So did any of you see Black Swan? If so, what did you think? If not, do you plan to and why or why not?

I haven't seen the movie and really don't plan to. I heard it was a psychological thriller and I really don't get into those.

I haven't seen Black Swan, and won't see it in a theater. I might rent it or watch on television if I get the chance. I don't know that much about the movie, so I'm not sure if it's something I'd enjoy or not.

I was thinking I wanted to see it for the dancing and I've always liked Natalie Portman. but then I found out it is very dark, so it is unlikely I will end up watching it.

I have heard really good things about it and have a friend that really loved it. But I dont want to see it enough to pay the cost to go to a theatre. I will probably end up watching it but not until its on HBO.

The movie, Black Swan, sure looks scary. While I love Natalie Portman and heard about the training she went through for the movie, I probably won't watch it until it comes out on DVD.
Congrats on getting your books. The first day I got my first book, I slept with it under my pillow. Every time I'd wake up and wonder if it was real, I'd reach under my pillow to make sure. I've done it with all 4 of my books.
As for The Black Swan--I'd love to see it for the dancing (my daughter's a ballerina and there's a lot of talk about it around the dance school) but I don't do scary movies. I never got why people would pay to have the crap scared out of them.
I haven't seen this movie. I may rent it when it comes to DVD.
I have seen it and I won't see it in the theater. But I will probably rent it when it comes out. I don't like to spent the money at the theater, it is just too expense.

Hi Linda - I love a good psychological thriller, but I have to be in the mood for one. They're definitely not for everyone, though.
Barbara - Normally, if something is nominated for an Academy Award, it's usually a sure sign I won't like it. LOL I don't like deep and meaningful in my movies. I just want to be entertained. But I thought I'd give this one a whirl.
Kris - It's definitely dark. If you don't like dark, you probably won't enjoy it.
Donna - I try to catch the earliest feature at the theater and then it's cheaper. I agree that the prices are really high, and God forbid, don't get the 50-gallon drum of popcorn. I need a second job to pay for it. :)
Michele - I love the artwork on my other books, too. The artist is a genius!
Robin - you know, a movie has never scared me. Ever. And I started watching horror in elementary school as well as reading Stephen King. I think I go because I'm hoping something WILL finally scare me.
I'm sure a therapist could sort it all out. LOL

Rebekah - I agree, movies are expensive. It's my one splurge, though, so I try to see a couple of month - early feature of course - when it's cheaper. :)

I had plans to rent the Sallie House (Sightings, Most Haunted Places, Heartland Ghost) while I wrote my first novel length horror piece. But the romance bug bit me harder.
Black Swan was on my to watch list, but eh. If it didn't move you, I'll save my quarters for Red Riding Hood. The cinematography looks amazing.

Any time there's a lot of hype about a film, I tend to avoid it. Not sure why that is, other than I usually tend to be disappointed. I wasn't interested in Black Swan, but for some reason I did track down spoilers for it and that satisfied any and all curiosity I'll probably ever have about the film. :)
I'm the opposite of you, Jana, I avoid any movie that will scare me. I had to see Silence of the Lambs in college for a film class, and I'm still scarred.
I'm sure Portman's performance is as amazing as they say, and I hope she wins the Oscar, but I don't need to see it.

I live fifteen to twenty minutes away from the Sallie house, so I may do it yet.
I think you'd like the Trolley Tour. Atchison has a haunted tour every fall and they usually get one of the houses on the tour to open for visitors afterward. I got some orb pictures, but I'm not sure where they went.
You know what would be cool? To do a thriller/horror writers' retreat at a haunted venue.
When you have time, I'd love to hear about your stay in the Jefferson.

My daughter and son-in-law and another friend all said they loved the movie. None of them are die hard horror/thriller fans that like you, I am too. I think I would like to see it since they liked it but just not expect too much of it and then I won't be disappointed lol. I hate when a move is hyped so much that it's now what I thought. My friend did give something away which I hate but not enought to totally spoil it.
catslady - I think it's worth a viewing (assuming dark thrillers are something you like) if only to see NP's performance. She was absolutely brilliant. I totally bought it and can clearly see why she's up for an AA. But the movie overall, meh.
I can't stand sitting in the theater for that long. I might see it when it comes out on dvd.
Oh, Saranna, I would SOOOO be up for a horror house retreat! I did a blog post many years ago about it, perhaps on my now defunct personal blog. I will have to dig it up and repost sometime soon. It would be fitting with the book. :)
Kristi - I recently had foot surgery and stayed away from the theatres for a while. I was too afraid someone would step on my foot and my back was killing me from walking offset.
We have a fancy theater here in Dallas that has reclining seating. Tickets are $20-25 each though. But for a special occasion, it might be nice.
I don't plan to see Black Swan. Lots of crap going on in my life so I'm trying to stick with comedys.

Refhater - I totally understand. The movies I watch are totally dependent on my mood, which is usually dependent on other life circumstances.
Tori - I promise my book is only a little spooky. Just enough to create a gothic-lite sort of feel. :)
I saw "Black Swan" and I loved it. I thought it did its job as a psychological thriller and trying to figure out what was real and what was in her reality.
Jane - yes, trying to figure out real versus her imagination was probably the most interesting part for me, but I didn't have any trouble with it. I wonder if women caught on to some of the subtleties more than men, though.
