Hey…today I’d love to introduce you guys to a fellow writer and friend. (Hey…she’s short like me, I’ve gotta love her!) I’ve already bought my copy of Cattitude (Don’t you love that title) and I can’t wait to read it.
Oh, one other thing. Tomorrow I’m guest blogging at Borders’ True Romance about, thinking like a man, sort of . . . men behaving badly, and I would love it if you could pop over and leave a comment. I’m giving away two books.
Thanks CC
Desperately yearning for a romantic comedy
A big thank you to the fabulous Christie Craig for having me as her guest today. I love books and movies, and lately I’ve been reading a lot of great books but not seeing a lot of great movies. Especially movies my husband and I can both enjoy. What happened to smart and funny and sometimes touching romantic comedies? To name a few: When Harry Met Sally (best ever!), Jerry Maguire, Two Weeks Notice, Dave, The American President, Ms. Congeniality, Bull Durham, Something’s Gotta Give, Legally Blonde, Letters to Julia.
I could name more, but for the most part I’m seeing a lot of dumb guy movies in which a man who isn’t likely to be confused with Brad Pitt or Stephen Hawking ends up with a smart and gorgeous woman. I’ve read that most movies are made to appeal to the male viewers because a woman will go with their man to see a movie and not vice-versa.
Does that mean movies have to be bad to be funny? My husband doesn’t agree. He’d rather watch an NCIS rerun than a Will Ferrell comedy. He wouldn’t see the Sex and the City movie with me, either. But all those romantic comedies I listed in the first paragraph? He likes them. A lot.
We own videos or DVDs of Dave, Two Weeks Notice, Miss Congeniality and a few others. My office is upstairs, and a couple times this last year when I came downstairs he was watching a video of Love Actually. That’s the kind of movie that you can watch again and again and still see something new. It’s funny and poignant with great writing, characters, and acting.
There aren’t enough movies like that. These last two weekends, I wanted to see a show, but there wasn’t anything out we thought would be good. I yearn for a great romantic comedy, but the industry isn’t putting enough out.
I have suggestions for movie makers. Read Christie Craig books! They’re funny, with a terrific plot, a great heroine and hero, a mystery, and a romance. Perfect for movies. And read Jennifer Crusie books! More movie perfection. I see on Gemma Halliday’s September 3rd blog that she published Viva Las Vegas as a digital book. She says it’s a cross between Sex and the City and Eat, Pray, Love. Some smart producer should snap that up!
Or they could snap up my e-book, Cattitude, about a cat that changes bodies with a woman and thinks anything a human can do, a cat can do better.
In all these books, neither the hero nor the heroine is portrayed as stupid, even if they sometimes do stupid things. That’s something the dumbed down movies don’t get.
What books do you think would be great movies?

Hi Edie,
Thanks so much for visiting with us today. I love the sound of your book!
CC
Christie, you already know I love your books. Thanks again for having me on Killer Fiction.
Edie, congrats on Cattitude!
I read the first couple pages after I bought it and it's good! (haven't read more because of judging contests, but I will soon)
You and your hubby had to have seen The Holiday, with Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, Jude Law and Kate Winslet, right? If not, rent it! Better yet, buy it! Total RC and 'chick flick', but my hubby watched it with me and I thought for sure he'd fall asleep. Instead, he stayed awake the whole movie and at the end said, "Wow, that was really good."
A few of my other favorites are: The Cutting Edge, Sahara, Ever After, Sweet Home Alabama, Tin Cup, What Women Want, While You Were Sleeping, and I could go on and on and on. (Most are on my website *grin*) And another one that got bad reviews but my hubby and I both liked was Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with Matthew McConnaughy and Jennifer Garner.
Can't tell I love movies as much as I love books. But only if they have the HEA. No movies where the hero goes through hell, appears to get his HEA, but then drowns at the end. *Growl!*
Guess I'll be in the minority here--as much as I love a good RC (Hey, Christie! You know I LOVE you!), I tend to like the stupid guy movies. :-P Or better yet--lots of explosions, XXX anyone?
I had the priviledge of reading CATTITUDE, but if you don't win the drawing, then get ye out and buy it! It's total awesomeness!
Love ya, Edie!
Stacey, we've seen must of the movies you mentioned. I'll check out Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and The Cutting Edge.
I wish the movie makers would realize how much we love them and put out more. And I feel the same way about unhappy endings.
Margaret, you're too funny liking explosions in movies. We're not on the same page there. But I knew you'd love Christie's book, because you have a great sense of humor in your own writing.
Thanks for your kind words about Cattitude. :)
Hey, Edie,
Great blog. And your book sounds wonderful. I'll add it to my TBR list.
Best wishes,
Faye
Faye, thanks!
Edie, congrats again on the release of Cattitude! I bought my copy, but can't start it till I get my EPIC entries read. But I'm really looking forward to it. :-)
Like Stacey, I love The Cutting Edge (bought the VHS back when it first came out, though it's seen better days from so much use...LOL).
I'm not big on "chick flicks" (don't know why, but I usually prefer to read romance rather than watch it *shrug*), but there are a few I've seen lately and really enjoyed, like New In Town (love Harry Connick Jr.!) and The Ugly Truth (and Gerard Butler *g*).
My husband and I are longtime horror fans, and to me nothing beats a great comedy. Arthur, with Dudley Moore & Liza Minnelli, will forever be my all-time fave movie. And like you, I think ANY of Christie Craig's fabulously funny books would make a great movie. And as a Janet E. fan, I can't wait till One For the Money is in theatres.
Love the title Cattitude! With six indoor cats and two outdoor ferals who condescend to let me feed and care for them, I can definitely relate to the premise.
Donna, I'll probably see One for the Money when it's out too. I hope they do the book and characters justice.
I don't think I saw New in Town or The Ugly Truth. I'm going to check them both out. Thanks!
Diane, six indoor cats! I bow down to you.
I have two dogs and one cat, and sometimes they're a lot of work. (Like this morning, which I won't talk about here. lol) But messes and all, they're worth it.
Edie - clearly you've met my cats. LOL I am going to see about getting your book on my nook! (A Dr. Seuss rhyme)
Jan, another cat lover! I think there are a lot of us. And another Dr. Seuss fan! One of my favorite writers.
Edie - I love the way you think - from your blog to producers' ears!
P.S. And now I want a cat.
~Gemma
Gemma, I hope that happens! And, yes, cats are good. They end up stealing your lap and your heart.
Edie, you're so right. We need some good RC's. You mentioned one of my favorites...Miss Congeniality.
Can't wait to read Cattitude.
June, Sandra Bullock is a natural at romantic comedies. She's not afraid to poke fun at herself.
I love cats and dogs - I have three of each! I learned to read on Dr. Seuss and am currently buying the entire series for my niece.
Most importantly:
Your book is in my Nook!
(God, that almost sounds dirty)
Jan, too funny. You rhymed! And it didn't sound dirty to me. I didn't know that it was up on Barnes & Noble yet, so now I'm excited. Thanks! I hope you enjoy it.
How could you forget "Notting Hill"? Love, love, love that movie.
I agree. I totally do not get how the ... shall we say ... homely guy will get the gorgeous chick. That's right up there with an older actor in a love story with a sweet young thing. Can you say "ick"?
Congrats on your release, Edie.
Liz, at least the older guy usually has money. And if he looked like Cary Grant did when he was older and did a few romantic comedies... That would work with me.
I do remember Notting Hill. That was a good one, too.
Edie,
Thanks again for guest blogging with us. Here's to more great romantic comedies soon.
CC
Christie, I loved being here.
I have a winner for my free e-book! Random.org picked Gemma Halliday's name. If she emails me at edieramerATgmailDOTcom, I'll make sure she gets it.
Thank you again!
I would like to see Away by Amy Bloom as a movie because I love the characters and The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters just because it's a different kind of ghost story. And of course, I haven't read Cattitude yet, but I'm guess that would make a great movie too.
Brenda, I didn't read those 2 books. I'll pick them up!
Edie,
I agree with you about the movies. We can't find anything good either.
I already have Cattitude. Dying to read it.
Last night my little kitty, Dora, got into a plastic bag with a handle and got it wrapped around her neck. At first I thought she was playing but she was terrified. I won't let that happen again. She was frantic. Not that I blamed her. Poor little thing.
Sandy, it was a good thing you were there to untangle your kitten. I can imagine her being terrified.
I hope you enjoy Cattitude! I still get excited when someone tells me she bought it. lol
