Killer Fiction's Kick Off the New Year Contest!!!!


There's nothing better than a contest to kick off the year! Here at Killer Fiction, we'd like to thank all our readers for a fabulous 2010 and kick off 2011 in fine fashion. And what better way to kick off the new year than with free stuff! All the rules for the contest are on the sidebar, so read up and make sure you're entered to win great prizes.

For my official contest blog post, I decided to share with you the story of my first ever reader review. I once told my critique partner that I wanted to be a writer because books had given me so much pleasure all my life, and that if I could give that feeling to even one person, I would be successful. And then I got my first review.

The review was from a professional reviewer on an advanced reader copy of RUMBLE ON THE BAYOU. The review was glowing and I was beside myself with happiness. Of course, I immediately emailed the reviewer to thank her for the wonderful review and that's when I got more than I bargained for.

The reviewer emailed back and said how much she'd enjoyed the book and that it had been a real surprise. Then she went on to say that she'd dreaded that month coming because her child had died that month the year before. But, she said, when she was reading my book, she forgot about everything for just a little while and even laughed.

Totally made me cry.

Words are powerful. Words CAN change someone's life, even if only to allow laughter for just a few fleeting moments.

So take as much time as you have to read a good book. And if you really enjoyed it, email the author and let them know. Anyone who knows much about the business of writing knows we're not in it for the money. We're in it because we love a good book and there's no greater high than producing one yourself.

    I've already written to some of my favorite authors, right after I've "discovered" them, lol. I know I always feel very grateful when I read the kind of book I would have looooved to write (if I had any talent I mean). I wrote to Kristan Higgins, Christie Craig and Susan Elizabeth ohillips. Some others too but I can't remember. I just needed to tell them how good their book had make me feel.
    Also I received nice sweet replies from them... and that I think is one great thing about the online romance writer community... you share with your readers !!

    I love the post, Jana. Words really are powerful and nothing is better than hearing from readers that your words, your book, helped someone get through a tough time. It's the best big prize in this business.

    I always try to contact an author after reading a book and I have gotten some wonderful responses back.     I feel like a big dorky fanboy when I tell authors I like their work. "Um, I liked your book . Um, thanks." I was amazed to hear that authors actually want to hear from fans.

    That was a powerful piece of feedback that you got from your reviewer. You were able to touch her life and give a little bit of comfort.

    OMG! The reader comment would have had me crying for days. I can't relate to her grief, but I understand about how your book made her laugh. ROTB was hysterical as are all the rest.

    I really appreciated reading your post this morning! I too, have written to authors after reading a book that really touched me. I've been using Facebook as a means to stay connected to authors..just knowing that they too read our comments has opened up a whole new world to me. Thank you for this fun contest!

    Thanks for the freebie, Jana. I write to all my favorite authors and do my best to meet them at conferences, book signings, etc. I work in library and authors are our favorite people. They go out of their way to thank us for helping them with research and are alway generous with their comments and PR materials for their upcoming books. You rock!

    For some unknown reason today is the first time I have been in this blog. Jana, I sometimes have written to authors but really not as much as I should.

    I have only been able to read Mischief in Mudbug but definitely want to read your other books.

    Great post, I have contacted authors a few times over books that were really good. I can't say I do it with all books but some books just stand out.     I've had many misconceptions about authors cleared up since becoming involved in the whole social media thing. One being that once published, forevermore published. The other being that it may not be all that lucrative and is done more for love than financial reward. So I say this as often as I can: thank you from the bottom of my heart. Often when I tell an author I enjoyed their book, I get an outpouring of gratitude. But, it is me who is forever grateful! I get all the rewards from reading books, without having to put forth any of the effort and I truly appreciate all the blood, sweat, and tears that go into writing as well as the nail-biting pressure of getting published!!! THANK YOU!!

    I loved the comment you made about your first review. It's amazing how you can loose yourself in a really good book< I have done it may times. I am an avid reader, most of the time, it's at least one book a day, sometimes more. I have downloaded Trouble in Mudbug and I thank you for the free download, I'm sure I will enjoy it very much.     I have been reading over 60 yrs and hope to continue for the rest of my life. I love great books and there are so many out there. Of course I love HEA as these really make me feel good. Mystery and suspense make my brain work to figure out who done it. lol Thanks to all the authors who just want to entertain us and provide us with an escape in a great book. I know reading kept me sane when I was going through tough times.

    I guess I was not a good girl this yr because Santa did not bring me a ereader..But maybe I can win one.

    What a great story! There have been so very many books that I've said to myself that I need to let that author know just how much I enjoyed her (or his) writings, but it's been rare that I've actually acted on it. That review had to let you know you took the right step in becoming an author!

    Thank you so much for the free read! The first review you shared brought me to tears and I understand the reviewer so well. There have been certain books that I have read that really touched my heart or let me escape into a world of less stress and worry. I always let the writer know as sometimes you are not sure if they know what a big impact their words can have on someone's life and I like to thank them for becoming a writer, as without them my world would be so much smaller and so much duller!

    Authors usually are very nice people! The ones I've met at book signings (even though there isn't much time between people in line) seem to enjoy comments from readers. Nice to know the comments by readers are read by the authors. Thanks for the free download. Free is always good.

    With this day and age when money is always tight, it's nice to see we can always find a free read. When I can read 3/4 books a week, I down too maybe 2, unless I can find a free read. The amazing thing is, when I find those rare free reads, it's someone new and I'd say 98% of the time the have reader for life, there usally the newbies getting started and there "FRESH" reads. Keep writing and we'll keep reading.

    I always thank anyone that is thoughtful enough to send me a book. And if I enjoy the book I also write. Most authors do seem to appreciate it when I tell them how much I enjoyed their book. One good deed deserves another lol. Reading gives me such joy and where would we be without you wonderful authors!!

    I was always to chicken to write a thank you to my favourite authors. Sadly, both have died- Dick Francis and James Herriot. I read and reread their books all the time.

    What a great post. I read books to be entertained or just to get away from my troubles for awhile. Comedy does that for me. People always look at you funny when you're laughing out loud because of something that happened or was said on a particular page. I don't care about that though, I just tell them you should read this book
    it's hilarious. Sometimes life is really difficult and you authors give us a chance to escape them if even for a little while.

    I enjoyed your post. I have written to authors and I've met some in person as well and I enjoyed telling them just how much I loved their books.
    I can say that reading a great book does help in times of trouble, to take you away for a while and forget about things.

    I really believe in the power of the written word. Many times in my life when a book as gotten me through some rough times or made me think or just gave me a great deal of pleasure for one afternoon. It must of meant a lot to you to get that kind of feedback.

    It is nice to read that you got some really great feedback! Many people don't always take the time to respond positively to anything, let alone a positive response to reading a great story. What is wonderful about this day and age with technology what it is, is the ability to send a note instantly to whomever one desires!

    I don't recall if I've ever written an author, though I did friend a writer who was new to me on facebook recently and I told her in my request that she was my new 'writing hero' and that I loved her books.

    I don't know how many authors I've emailed to tell them I love their books. I've even had a few respond. One such author is mystery author, Laura Childs. It's been a real treat to become email buddies with her.

    And of course the great Christie Craig. But she already knows I think she rocks. :-)

    I appreciated your blog. I ama reader. I have no desire to be an author. I'll read pretty much anything and only rarely do I say to myself how could I have wasted that much of my life reading that dreck. Reading takes me away. It makes me, laugh, cry, cringe, and think. Thanks to the internet we have greater acess to our favorite authors and can encourage them as they grow. I try to do that. I also get to thank the ones I've read for the hours of enjoyment.
